Unfair, unsustainable and unpaid internships

During my search for work related to sustainable energy engineering I have had a few companies say that they were willing to take me on unpaid, but couldn’t afford to pay me. I turned such offers down, considering them to be unfair and unsustainable. Employers should not take advantage of engineering students who need to complete their industrial training to complete their degree. I have even heard from one of my peers that some students have taken on unpaid internships, and had to stay on longer than the required time of 60 days full-time work, because the employer would not sign documentation to say that the student had fulfilled the industrial training requirements (namely, 60 days of full-time work).
